(HealthDayNews) — You may know what to do if a fire breaks out in your home, but do your kids?

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia suggests you:

  • Make sure your kids know an escape route, as well as an alternate way out of the house.
  • Practice fire drills at home.
  • Teach your kids how to “stop, drop and roll” if their clothes catch fire.
  • Tell them to crouch low, below the smoke, and crawl to safety.
  • Teach them that if a doorknob’s hot, they’re not to open the door. A hot knob usually means fire in the room behind.
  • Emphasize that once they’ve left a burning building, they must not return to it until the fire’s put out.
  • Teach companies them what to expect from firefighters and not to hide from rescue workers. Firefighters dressed in their garb can be a scary sight for some kids.
