Approximately 80 percent of Americans have some form of the condition, which is a bacterial infection of the gums surrounding the teeth.<\/p>\n\n<p>Gingivitis is the mildest and most common form of gum disease, causing inflammation of the tissues around the teeth. More serious is periodontitis, when the inflammation affects the connective tissue supporting the teeth and, eventually, the bone.
