Minorities such as Asians, Hispanics and blacks were at less risk for depression than whites, the researchers report.<\/p>\n\n<p>The report appears in the October issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;Major depression is a prevalent disorder,&#8221; said Hasin. &#8220;It is associated with a lot of disability.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Hasin and her colleagues surveyed more than 43,000 U.S. adults aged 18 and older. They found that 5.3 percent of those surveyed had depression within the past year, while 13.2 percent had experienced depression within their lifetime.<\/p>\n\n<p>In addition, women were more likely to receive treatment than men. Both current and lifetime depression were significantly associated with substance dependence, panic and generalized anxiety disorder, and personality disorders, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n<p>There\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"ccgndvtyldowupwnfgfx\"><\/span>\n\n was a strong relationship between depression and drug dependence, but less of a relationship between depression and drug abuse, Hasin said.<\/p> \n\n<p>There is ongoing debate among psychiatrists as to the exact distinctions between drug abuse and drug  dependence.
